The chairman of Britain’s consumer watchdog has announced plans to step down as Rachel Reeves urges regulators to slash red tape and turbocharge growth, The Telegraph reported. Baroness Manzoor, who oversees the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), revealed her resignation during an appearance before MPs on Tuesday. It comes just days after the departure of chief executive Abby Thomas, and follows the Government’s move last month to replace Marcus Bokkerink as chairman of the Competition and Markets Authority.

Brazil inflation edged down at the start of the year, as one-time energy credits provided consumers temporary relief from simmering price pressures, Bloomberg News reported. Official data released Tuesday showed consumer prices rose 4.56% from a year earlier, just under the 4.58% median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists and down from December’s pace of 4.83%. On the month, they increased 0.16%. The central bank is planning to take the benchmark Selic to 14.25% next month, marking its third-straight full-point hike, to bring down prices.

Mexico will start consultations with the US government to explain why it considers the steel and aluminum tariffs ordered by President Donald Trump as “not justified,” said Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Bloomberg News reported. First, Mexico imports more steel and aluminum from the US than it exports to that country, Ebrard argued, and also the Latin American country is the main destination for US exports of steel products, “representing 52% of its global exports at the end of 2024,” he added.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that Canada would seek to highlight the negative impact of the United States' steel and aluminium tariffs and that - if needed - the response from Canada would be firm and clear, Reuters reported. Germany's trade surplus with the United States reached a record level, data from the statistics office showed, as countries wait to learn how U.S. President Donald Trump will impose tariffs on imported goods, Reuters reported. Germany's trade surplus with the U.S. expanded to 70 billion euros ($72 billion) in 2024, well above the previous record of 63.3 billion euros reported for the full year 2023. Portugal’s government is considering selling a stake of at least 49% of TAP SA in its latest attempt to privatize the state-owned airline, Bloomberg News reported. The privatization process is due to start in March and may be concluded at the end of this year or in 2026, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing information that isn’t public. There are about 12 firms interested in TAP. Europe’s largest full-service airlines — Air France-KLM, Deutsche Lufthansa AG and British Airways owner IAG SA — have all gone public with their interest in TAP.

China Vanke Co. won more support from authorities as its largest state shareholder agreed to provide up to 2.8 billion yuan ($383 million) to help the struggling developer repay outstanding debt, Bloomberg News reported. Shenzhen Metro Group Co., which holds a 27% stake in Vanke, signed a three-year secured loan agreement with the firm on Monday, according to a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. Under the deal, Vanke will provide asset collateral worth up to 4 billion yuan to Shenzhen Metro through an 18% stake in its property management unit Onewo Inc.
